What is Yoga Teacher Training?

Yoga Teacher Training is not only an opportunity to share your love and passion of yoga with the world but it is also an inner journey of self-discovery. It is an experience in which you will strengthen your personal practice, learn the skills to teach yoga, and transform your life and the lives of others around you. You get what you put in with training! Whether you actually want to teach or treat yourself to a journey of self discovery and deepen your practice, this is for you.

How do I know if I’m ready?

All you need to do is say yes. We do not require you to be a super advanced yogi! We do like for you to have an understanding of basic yoga postures, a semi regular practice and an open heart!

Teacher Training is an amazing way to transform your practice, deepen your knowledge of yoga and of yourself. The desire to teach is not essential to the experience.

Meet the Trainers

Megan Merriam
Meet Megan Merriam. Megan has been with HotShop since the very beginning, so you might recognize her! Megan holds the E-RYT200 (Experienced Yoga Teacher with 200 hour training) in Hot Yoga, Vinyasa and is a Certified JOGA instructor. With her training and extensive self study, retreats and subsidiary yoga trainings, Megan has put together a world class program that is unique to HotShop. With her blend of health and wellness, fitness and business experience, you will gain insight into how Megan has developed her group and private practice over more than 2000 teaching hours in the last 6 years. Her path has led her around the world, teaching in premiere studios and leading yoga programs in Canada, UAE and USA. Her ability to instantly connect with her students makes Megan an extraordinary teacher, she recently graduated 13 students from our last training at HotShop. Her leadership qualities continue to provide a mentorship channel for her students and many other new Yogis.
If you see her around the studio say hi and ask her any questions you might have!
Rachel Gilker
You might recognize Rachel from her regular classes at the North West and Victoria Park studios. Rachel has also been with HotShop since the very beginning! Rachel completed her first 200hr training in 2012 and since then has completed her Kids Yoga Certification and is now a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT). Rachel is the magic behind our anatomy portion of the training. She is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and has experience in Trauma, Orthopaedics, and Brain Injury. She is currently working as a nurse in the Rehabilitation and Education Day Program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and as a Yoga Therapist teaching for the Paediatric Intensive Pain and Rehabilitation Program. While traveling last year she studied and practiced in India and began developing a Brain Injury Rehab Program while living in New Zealand. She has combined her yoga and medical training to bring you a thorough, thoughtful anatomy session in this training!

Along with Meg & Rachel the training includes workshops from some of your favourite yoga teachers at HotShop!

Do I need to practice yoga asana to take part in this training?

Yes. This training can be quite physical. We will practice yoga asana daily. If you have injuries or physical restrictions, please indicate on your applications form. This is totally fine however - it will be good to learn modifications for injuries or restrictions! It is important that you listen to your body and take breaks where necessary.

Are beginners welcome? What prior experience or level of practice is required for admission?

Yes! We believe that all practitioners can benefit from taking this teacher training course. The program is designed to take you on a journey of self-discovery, and lead you on the path of becoming a great teacher if that is your calling! An open heart and an open mind allows for anything to be possible!

Are some Teacher Trainings better than others?

Keep in mind that every training will be very different and it is important that you know the style of training you are looking for. The energy you bring to the training, along with the others around you will contribute to the unique experience. The yoga alliance certified trainings are governed by a strict syllabus with hour and teaching standards they believe all yoga teachers should be taught.

What Kind of Yoga is taught?

We teach a variety of styles to create a hybrid brand unique to HotShop. The foundation Hatha Asana translate into Power Flow, Freestyle Flow, Core Power, Hot Hips, Yoga Sculpt and Yin.

What are the requirements outside of contact hours?

Approximately 20 hours of homework, reading and practicum will be required outside of the 180 contacts hours to meet the 200 Hour requirements.

Will I be qualified to teach yoga once I complete the 200-Hour Teacher Training Program?

You will have the tools you need to start your journey towards teaching yoga classes. Please keep in mind that the work is up to you once you have completed the training hours to practice, practice, practice! Until you feel comfortable to teach at a studio level. Most students will take time to continue to study, grow and practice once the training has ended.

What Is Yoga Alliance?

Yoga Alliance is the governing body for yoga schools to help ensure the quality and content of yoga training programs and is recognized globally. You will receive a 200 Hour certification recognized by Yoga Alliance upon completion of this course.
